Background of the Study
Climate change poses a significant threat to rural livelihoods, particularly in regions where agriculture and natural resource management are central to economic survival. In Ijebu East Local Government Area, Ogun State, Nigeria, changing weather patterns, increased frequency of extreme events, and shifting climatic conditions have profoundly affected farming practices and community resilience. Rural communities, heavily dependent on agriculture, face challenges such as reduced crop yields, water scarcity, and soil degradation (Adekunle, 2023). These impacts not only threaten food security but also disrupt traditional ways of life and economic stability. Local adaptation strategies have been implemented to mitigate the effects of climate change, yet the effectiveness of these measures remains uncertain (Balogun, 2024). The interplay between environmental stressors and socio-economic factors necessitates a comprehensive evaluation of climate change impacts on rural livelihoods. This study aims to analyze the direct and indirect effects of climate change on agricultural productivity, income, and community well-being in Ijebu East, offering insights into adaptation and mitigation strategies that can enhance rural resilience. The findings will inform policy interventions for sustainable rural development in the face of a changing climate. Ultimately, this research will provide a basis for designing adaptive measures that secure rural livelihoods.

Statement of the Problem
Rural livelihoods in Ijebu East have been severely disrupted by the adverse effects of climate change. Unpredictable weather patterns, frequent droughts, and flooding have led to declining agricultural productivity and income instability (Adekunle, 2023). The inadequacy of current adaptation measures further exacerbates the vulnerability of rural communities. This environmental instability has heightened food insecurity and reduced the resilience of local economies (Balogun, 2024). The gap between climate adaptation policies and on-the-ground realities has resulted in significant challenges for rural populations. This study aims to assess the extent of climate change impacts on rural livelihoods and to identify effective adaptation strategies that can mitigate these effects and enhance community resilience.

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To evaluate the impact of climate change on agricultural productivity in Ijebu East.

  2. To assess the socio-economic effects of climate change on rural livelihoods.

  3. To propose adaptation strategies to enhance rural resilience.

Research Questions:

  1. How does climate change affect agricultural productivity in Ijebu East?

  2. What are the socio-economic impacts of climate change on rural communities?

  3. What adaptation strategies can mitigate the adverse effects of climate change?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. H1: Climate change significantly reduces agricultural productivity.

  2. H2: Rural livelihoods are adversely affected by climate change-induced environmental changes.

  3. H3: Effective adaptation strategies can improve rural resilience.

Significance of the Study
This study investigates the impact of climate change on rural livelihoods, providing critical insights into how environmental changes affect agricultural productivity and community stability. The research informs policymakers and stakeholders on effective adaptation strategies to safeguard rural economies and food security. Its findings will contribute to the development of sustainable rural development plans that address the challenges posed by climate change, ultimately enhancing resilience in vulnerable communities (Adekunle, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to assessing the impact of climate change on rural livelihoods in Ijebu East Local Government Area, Ogun State, Nigeria, focusing exclusively on agricultural and socio-economic effects.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Climate Change: Long-term changes in temperature, precipitation, and weather patterns.

  • Rural Livelihoods: The means of securing food, income, and well-being in rural areas.

  • Adaptation Strategies: Measures taken to adjust to and mitigate the impacts of climate change.
